When asked to design a font symbolising peace and harmony, my mind immediately went back to something I’ve always imagined: a constant fight between capital and lowercase letters. I always saw capital letters bullying the small ones—always going first in names and important words, taking up so much space, and carrying beautiful ornaments when placed at the beginning of a paragraph in old books.
That’s how Unity was born: combining every lowercase character with its uppercase counterpart, keeping the essential qualities of both in harmony.
Using the analogy between the thick and thin strokes of Didot, Unity has an elegant vibe while remaining expressive and balanced. With the smooth curves of the lowercase letters and the sharp corners of the capital letters, Unity becomes a visual metaphor for what a community should be: welcoming, but ready to fight for its beliefs.
